What would happen if the world were ending?Ī catastrophic event renders the earth a ticking time bomb. I can find some faults with it, but honestly I loved the 5000 year jump ahead in time, even if I didn't really think things would've worked out the way they did. From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Anathem, Reamde, and Cryptonomicon comes an exciting and thought-provoking science fiction epic - a grand story of annihilation and survival spanning five thousand years. Super glad Jess mentioned it was good enough for a re-read. I love his work and I wanted to read it the first time I saw it, but then I read SO MANY crappy reviews and was all set to skip it. XD But goddamn, I am really glad I read it. I normally skim those sections, harder to do with an audiobook. It got awfully wordy and bogged down in explanations a lot of times, but I'm pretty used to that from Stephenson, honestly. How did they survive? I would read that prequel/sequel.

I totally saw the thing with the diggers coming, and that was pretty believable, but not the pingers. I mean, okay, they had actual recorded history, so maybe, but 5000 years is a long goddamn time. And I side-eye the idea that the culture is still *so* about the seven and old earth.

I guess it was kind of touched on, characterization and all, but. I seriously do not buy that after 5000 years the "human races" would still be identifiable, especially to the point where "breeds" - crossbreeds - were an anomaly. :( But her "strategy" for her children was kind of facinating, so I wish we'd gotten to know more about them. Shrug.Īida was just kind of 2 dimensional. But I kind of liked how toward the end of part 2 we find out that she knows it. She's just like, why not ruin everything, you know, for funsies? She's like, dolores umbridge level awful. I don't understand why they didn't just kill her when they had the chance(s).
